Charles Manson Embraces Creative Commons

Charles Manson Creative CommonsCC is a special license that allows anyone to download, share and mix other people’s music as long as they give proper credit. Recently, Nine Inch Nails released their album under a Creative Commons license, and it has been a great success!

Charles Manson of the Tate and LaBianca murders and leader of the infamous Manson Family, has released the digital album One Mind over the Web.

One Mind is licensed under the Creative Commons license witch allows anyone to share it with others, remix it and use it for non-commercial uses. The exact legal details are here.

It should be mentioned that one of the reasons that Manson sent his minions to Tate’s house to kill everybody in it was that he thought it was occupied by a record producer who had rejected his music.

The album can be downloaded from here (68.6 MB)

Playing FLV files in Windows Media Player 11

FLV fileLately, i’ve downloading lots of FLV files off of multiple websites. I have both K-lite and VLC installed on my laptop, witch pretty much does the trick.

Today, i wanted to play an FLV file in Windows Media Player 11, but as you might have noticed, WMP does not support FLV playback. So here’s what i did:

To play FLV files, we need to have a splitter because of the way it encodes two streams. I chose the FLV Splitter from the Guliverkli2 project.

1- Download the Splitter, you’ll have to register the file manually.
2-Place the “FLVSplitter.ax” file in your preferred directory, i chose c:\windows
3-Launch the Run service, and run the following line:

regsvr32 C:\WINDOWS\FLVSplitter.ax

Congratulation, Windows Media Player 11 now supports FLV playback on your PC

P.S: The Guliverkli2 project provides support for many other file types then FLV, includin: ogg, mov, rm…..Make sure to check it out

Geek lists: Free Portable Applications

memory stickSince the moment i got my 1 GB Flash Memory stick, i began to gather all the portable applications i can find. Usually these applications are not marketed as portable, but you can easily figure it out by renaming the installation directory and running the application, if it run properly then it’s a portable application.

Here’s a list of free portable applications that every IT guy should have on his flash memory at all time.

PortableApps.com’s has a very nice list of portable application, here’s my favorite:

DesktopApps’s Simple and portable applications:

  • menuApp - a menu based application launcher.
  • audioApp - for all your one-click muting needs.
  • monitorApp - a small system resource monitor.
  • imageApp - a digital image viewer.

Windows Sysinternals’s (formerly Sysinternals) portable system monitoring software:

  • Process Monitor - real-time monitoring of file system, Registry and process/thread activity
  • RegMon - Sysinternals.com - Monitors all modifications on the registry
  • DiskMon - Monitors all modifications and traffic on the hard drives
  • FileMon - Monitors all modifications and traffic on files
  • TcpView - Monitors all traffic incoming and outcoming from the system

All of the following application are 100% portable:

i will keep updating this list, every time i find a new portable application

Free RM to Mp3 Converter

Switch LogoFor the last couple of days i spent lots of time searching for a converter that would convert an .ra file to mp3. After trying about 10 failing programs, i found Switch produced by NCH Software. The program is able to converter ALL Real audio files( .ra, .rm, .rmj, .ram) into a variety of formats including mp3, ogg, wav… It can also extract audio from Video files such as mov mpeg and avi.
Switch has a very user friendly interface, just click on the add a file button(you can also add a whole folder) and you pick one of the many file formats.

Switch iFormats

then select the output format from the list and click convert. THAT IT!

I recommend downloading this program and trying it out for yourself

Here’s the official Switch Page

And You can check NCH Software website for more information

First of all what is a .ram file?

From Wikipedia
Ram is a text file that contains a link to the Internet address where the Real Audio file is stored. The .ram file contains no audio data itself.

So, the ram will just point Realone Player to the actual place of the Real Audio file, and the player will stream it online.
With that out of the way, now let’s see how to download and run a ram file offline.

Let’s Go:

We will use the following file (interview) as an example for this tutorial: Rage.ram
The first thing to do is obviously download the file, then run any text editor such as Notepad.
Now simply Drag and Drop the downloaded file unto the text editor and you’ll get something like this
Rage.ram Content

As you might have noticed we have a list containing 12 link to ra files, these links are the different chapters of the interview, now you’ll you have to do is copy/paste each link at a time to your Web Browser where you’ll be prompted to download the file, save the file and soon you’ll have the full audio on your computer for your offline enjoyment.

Step By Step Recap:

1- Download the Ram file
2- Open Ram file with text editor
3- Copy links in text to web browser or download manager and save

P.S: You are required to download RealOne player to be able to play Real audio files (.ra, .rm, .rmvb)
